QRZ Lookups for Logger32
by N2AMG on Jan.04, 2009, under Software & Software Support
Since the Current version of Logger32 (3.16.0) no longer supports Internet lookups via QRZ, I have written two separate applications that will allow the user to get information via QRZ.
The first application “QRZSubscriberXMLLookup.exe” uses the Pay for use XML data feed from QRZ. In order to use this feed you need to have purchased one of QRZ’s XML subscriptions. At the time of this writing that was $29.95 a year. After installation whenever the Logger32 lookup window calls for a lookup this application opens and contacts QRZ’s data feed and populates the L32 lookup window with information recieved.
Follow the setup directions included in the zip file.
Current Version: 1.3.2
Full Download:QRZSubscriberXMLLookup.zip Updated 7/1/09 v1.3.2
The second application “QRZHTTPLookup.exe” uses a web browser to display the QRZ website. After the Browser window is opened by L32 the data is taken from the lookup page and populates the Logger32 lookup window. This way it does not bypass QRZ because the web page is still displayed before the information populates L32.
Current Version: 1.3.5
Full Download:QRZHTTPLookup.zip Updated 7/1/09 v1.3.5
If your system complains about missing files, Download this full install zip and it will install all dependant files on your system.Just copy the “QRZHTTPLookup.exe file to your L32 directory after installed.
Full Install Download:QRZHTTPLookupFullInstall.zip Updated 7/1/09 v1.3.5
Any Questions or problems encountered you can email me direct or post a message here or the Logger32 yahoo group. I will get back with you as soon as I can…

Hi Rick, tnx for this. I’m not going to subscribe so I installed the QRZHTTPlookup and it seems to be working just fine. In fact I like to see the QRZ webpage as it contains a lot of info abt the station I’m working. The ads are not such a problem.

Nick..
I will build a full installer build and this will install all the dependant files that are needed. I’m not understanding why the .ocx is missing from certain systems but Hold on for a little bit and I will have it built..

The Logger32 QRZ XML Lookup has been updated. You can download it from the link above. This includes some bug fixes and now displays an error message if QRZ returns an Error message.

QRZHTTPLookup.exe is great. I would like to suggest you to store windows and scroll positions.

Roland..
Goto the link above and redownload the QRZHTTPLookup.zip file. This will correct your problems. I made the mistake of releasing 2 updates using the same version number and users hadn’t downloaded the correct update.
Felipe..
The window position and size state(closed or open) are saveed currently. I can’t save the scroll position as then that would avoid you looking at the ads. and that would violate the lookup terms..

Hi, Rick,
Thanks for giving us the “missing links” from Logger32 to QRZ.com. I am using the Subscriber version. When I first loaded it I got the missing OCX message … quickly fixed by a Google search. However, I have to delete the .INI file containing the signon, password (encrypted) and the remaining data in order to use the lookup feature on a following day. The last line of the .INI file contains a rigid time out that I can’t change to a future date/time. Have you come up with a fix for this? If so, point me to it, please.

Hello Rick,
When installing, I keep getting this error-
An error occurred while registering the file C:\Windows\System32\msxml2.dll
Any ideas what I should do?
Mike
February 10th, 2009 on 6:24 pm
Mike..
What version of the lookup are you using?? the XML or the HTTP??
If it’s the XML will need to make a full install for it as it sounds like the dll is not registering correctly from the application.
Also I have added all of the current updates to the links above. These should correct all the misc errors that have cropped up..

Oh, sorry about that, it’s the HTTP version. I also did a complete re-install last night just before I posted it worked right after I posted and I was about to announce this when it quit working again??!!?? It seems to be a sporadic problem. I think I am going to turn off my anti virus and a few other things one at a time to see if I can isolate what it is.
Thanks Rick,
Mike

Not sure why exactly Rick but it is now working. I wonder if possibly there was a service or application running at the time causing the error. No matter, like I say it’s working which is the main thing. Thanks.

Dear Rick, first of all, thanks a lot for your efforts and this great working XML lookup. It’s really fast and delivers info within seconds. Meaning it WAS fast. I had a couple of changes here and XML does not lookup anymore (HTTP lookup still works). First I have a new DSL line (1Mbps) together with a new linksys modem/router/wireless/firewall etc and I did install the update of your software (now 1.2.0.5). One of the above is a roadblock to QRZ.com.
Quick question: which port is your program using, I might need to open it.
Did the updated software create problems with someone else?
Anyway, great job Rick and thanks again

Harry..
You do have the latest version of the gateway. It uses the same port as web lookups so if you can view web sites you should be able to get info from QRZ. One thing you can try is to delete the QRZXMLLookup.ini file and let the app recreate it the next time L32 loads it. It will ask you for your password and user name again I am thinking that maybe something is messed up there.. If that does not work i will send you a doctored version tha will output all returned info from the lookup to a text file so I can see what is happening..

Hey Rick, thanks for your response.
I downloaded the XMLLookup file again and also deleted the ini-file. Still doesn’t work. I noticed that the lookup reacts as if I entered the wrong QRZ-password. I made sure by logging on to QRZ.com that user name and password are working. Then I deliberately entered the wrong one in XMLLookup and it reacted as before, just doing nothing. Any ideas or clues?

Hey Rick,
thanks so much for your offline help. The XML-lookup is working great now and is an excellent compliment to the rich information in QRZ.com. Both together make up a valuable tool to obtain immediate background info on the ham I am currently working on the radio.
Many thanks again

I have just uploaded a new version of the QRZ XML Lookup the new version is 1.3.0 This version changes the QRZ address used to access the XML server as they have changed to a new one and also removes WinInet.dll from the project as it was causing some issues…

Hey Rick,
everything is just working fine, thanks a lot. But you asked for another issue, here is one:
Sometimes people write whole stories into the fields for NAME or QSL_VIA and when I try to save the record, respectively QSO, Logger does not accept the amount of text in that field.
Suggestion: Is it possible to truncate the text sent to Logger to the maximum length of the corresponding field in Logger?
Would save some hustle and add comfort…

Hi Rick,
I’ve noticed today that the NON subscriber version of your callsign lookup now puts the GigaParts advert right in the centre of my panel. This means I have to either resize the panel (takes up too much space or I have to scroll across the panel in order to see the station detail).
Is there a way you can fix this or is it yet another mechanism for screwing money out of us!!

Oups ! Said it too early… Have now message : “error loading Global sections of C/Program Files/Logger32/Logger32.ini/Some features/funtions of the program may not function correctly” at the start of Logger 32 and doesn’t open anymore !
I had to make a backup of my computer, to delete L32 and redownload it completely; I redownloaded your files (httplookup) as the same I did but nothing to do, L32 doesn’t start anymore with the files included… Any idea ??
Thanks in advance…
May 7th, 2009 on 7:18 pm
Actually I do not have a clue on that one.. That is one that you will need to post to the Logger32 group and see what they say…
Sorry….

ok… thanks, will see this way.

Hey Rick,
I haven’t written for a while, just enjoying the QRZ-XML-lookups coming up in a second or two. Great job, Rick.
Quick question, how do I know what is all copied into Logger upon XML-lookup? Or put the other way, can I also have the grid locator copied into logger? In Logger it says “Transfer all fields on lookup”, but the grid is not copied. Is this now a question for the Logger-group?
73, Harry, 7Z1HL
May 9th, 2009 on 5:41 am
Hi Harry..
In order for the grid to be passed to L32 you need to have one of the entry window boxes in L32 setup for the grid. Once you have that setup then the grid will be passed each time. If I remember right this is the only field from the lookup that needs to be done this way…
